Saturday Potpourri: The Searcher (Swashbuckler Archetype)

The Searcher (Swashbuckler Archetype)

The searcher’s interest in the magical devices began as a curiosity.  Now it’s an obsession that drives him to delve into dark, secret places in search of lost relics and wondrous items.

The searcher is an archetype of the swashbuckler class.

Class Skills

A searcher gains Disable Device, Knowledge (arcana), Spellcraft and Use Magic Device class skills, but does not gain Knowledge (nobility), Ride and Swim.

This ability alters the swashbuckler’s class skills list.

Trapfinding

At 2nd level, the searcher gains trapfinding, as the rogue class skill.  He adds ½ his level to Perception checks made to locate traps and to Disable Device skill checks.  A searcher can use Disable Device to disarm magic traps.

This ability replaces charmed life I.

Bonus Feats

In addition to combat feats, a searcher’s bonus feats at 4th, 8th, 12th, 16th and 20th level, can select from the following list of rogue talents: eldritch conduit, esoteric scholar, major magic, minor magic, occult dungeoneer, quick disable, shadow duplicate, spell storing, the whole time and wild magic. The searcher must meet all prerequisites for any of the rogue talents he selects.

Trap Sense (Ex)

At 6th level, a searcher gains an intuitive sense that alerts him to danger from traps, giving him a +1 bonus on Reflex saves made to avoid traps and a +1 dodge bonus to AC against attacks made by traps. These bonuses rise to +2 when the searcher reaches 10th level, to +3 when he reaches 14th level, to +4 when he reaches 18th level. Trap sense bonuses gained from multiple classes stack.

This ability replaces charmed life II, III, IV and V.

Deeds

Seeker-Do (Ex): At 1st level, a searcher can spend 1 panache point when he makes a Disable Device, Spellcraft or Use Magic Device to roll 1d6 and add the result to the check. He can do this after he makes the check but before the result is revealed. If the result of the d6 roll is a natural 6, he rolls another 1d6 and adds it to the check. He can continue to do this as long as she rolls natural 6s, up to a number of times equal to his Charisma modifier (minimum 1).

This deed replaces derring-do

Signature Wand (Ex): At 3rd level, once per day the searcher can spend 10 minutes practicing with a wand to designate it as his signature wand for the day.  As a free action, the searcher can spend 1 panache in order to activate the wand without having to succeed at a Use Magic Device check.

This deed replaces menacing swordplay.

Searcher’s Eye (Ex)

At 7th level, as a standard action the searcher can spend 1 panache to gain a +10 circumstance bonus on Spellcraft checks made to identify the properties and command words of magic items in his possession.

This ability replaces swashbuckler’s grace.

About mmiller

Mike Miller first discovered RPG’s in the days of TSR. The mention of a beholder or mind flayer still twists his guts with nervous dread, though now with a tinge of nostalgia. He had no publishing experience prior to writing for the OGN, but has long enjoyed creating histories and legends for his homebrewed worlds.
