Saturday Potpourri: Chaos Blade (Swashbuckler Archetype)

Chaos Blade (Swashbuckler Archetype)

Law is born of cowardice, created by men afraid of uncertainty.  The chaos blade is not afraid. He knows that uncertainty is the cradle of invention, ambition, and imagination.  Chaos is a creative force. It is from chaos that all things come into being. Chaos can also destroy. It is all part of the natural cycle; creation, existence, and destruction. Law seeks to overthrow nature. The chaos blade defends it.

The chaos blade is an archetype of the swashbuckler.

Alignment: A chaos blade must be of chaotic alignment.

Empowered Chaos (Ex)

At 2nd level, the chaos blade gains an advantage when fighting against enemies of lawful foes. Four times per day, a chaos blade may add his Charisma bonus to attack rolls against an opponent with a lawful component in its alignment or to creatures of the lawful subtype. At 6th level and every 4 levels thereafter, the number of rounds he can do this per day increases by one (to a maximum of 8 rounds per day at 18th level).

This ability replaces charmed life.

Deeds

Slashing Chaos (Ex): At 3rd level, when a chaos blade hits an opponent with a light- or one-handed piercing melee weapon, he can spend 1 panache point to imbue a target with chaos. For the next round, anytime the target rolls a d20, he must roll twice and take the less favorable result.

This ability replaces menacing swordplay.

Imposing Chaos (Ex): At 7th level, when a chaos blade hits an opponent of lawful alignment or of the lawful subtype with a light or one-handed piercing melee weapon, he can choose to do no damage and instead prevent the enemy from using spells or spell-like abilities for one round, unless they make a Fortitude save, DC 10 + 1/2 the chaos blade’s level + his Charisma modifier.

This ability replaces superior feint.

Bewildering Strike (Ex): At 11th level, while a chaos blade has at least 1 panache point, as a full-round action the chaos blade can make an attack with a single light- or one-handed piercing melee weapon as a targeted strike which targets the head. He may spend 1 panache to extend the duration of the confusion by one round.

This ability replaces subtle blade.

Disrupting Offensive (Ex): At 15th level, while the chaos blade has at least 1 panache point, he can, as a full-round action, make a disrupting offensive. The attack deals normal damage but also disrupts a spellcaster’s ability to cast spells. Spellcasters damaged by this attack must make a Fortitude save, DC 10 + 1/2 the chaos blade’s level + his Charisma bonus.

This ability replaces perfect thrust.

About mmiller

Mike Miller first discovered RPG’s in the days of TSR. The mention of a beholder or mind flayer still twists his guts with nervous dread, though now with a tinge of nostalgia. He had no publishing experience prior to writing for the OGN, but has long enjoyed creating histories and legends for his homebrewed worlds.
