The Magic Shoppe: Exotic Dragoncrafting

The sounds of the forest reverberate around you as you trudge through the underbrush. Birds flutter far above you in the tree tops and a river babbles just out of sight. Sunlight filters through the branches to illuminate the map you picked up in town. Following it’s directions you turn eastward at the cracked boulder and see a clearing before you. In the middle of the clearing under a golden canopy you see Valcav the person you’ve been searching for. He sits atop a mahogany bench dressed in his customary purple tunic making notes in a book with a flamboyant quill.

As you enter the clearing he sets his book aside and stands up to greet you. “Welcome friends to my modest tent. I hope you didn’t encounter any trouble finding the place.” Valcav grins are you from behind his dark spectacles. “I’ve got something very special to show you for coming all this way.” He gestures for you to join him under the canopy.  Valcav throws down a portable hole and pulls out massive chest. “When it comes to dragons, most adventurers are quite wasteful. Oh, sure some will harvest the skin for armor, the teeth for daggers and the bones for wands. But what they don’t realize is that every part of the dragon has a little magic inside it, all you need to do is look.” Valcav opens unlocks the chest to show an elegantly crafted lute and a chunk of yellow crystal etched in runes. “Take a look at these and I guarantee you will not look at a dead dragon the same way again.”

Lute of Draconic Presence

Valcav picks up the lute and strums a few simple cords. “Any bard worth their salt would be lucky to get their hands on one of these.” He holds it out for you to examine, “See these strings? They’re made from the intestines of an adult dragon. Obviously, it’s rare to find, but very much worth the trouble if you can get your hands on it.” Valcav plucks a single string to produce a low resonating note. “Just listen to how pure that sounds.” He pauses to let the sound drift throughout the glade. “You can just feel it in your bones.”

DESCRIPTION

This wooden lute is inlaid with carvings of red and blue dragons in flight. The strings have a metallic sheen that sparkle in the light.

BENEFITS

The magical nature of the lute’s strings provides a +5 bonus on all Perform (string) checks. In addition twice per day, the lute can call upon the latent aspect of draconic power that resides within the instrument. By strumming the lute the player can produce a deep reverberating note that causes every non-dragon within one hundred feet to become shaken for 1d4 minutes. This mind-affecting fear effect does not stack with itself. A DC 17 Will save negates the shaken condition and a creature who makes the save is immune to the lute’s powers for 24 hours

Preserved Wyrmlings Heart

With two hands Valcav holds up a chunk of yellow crystal the size of a loaf of bread. “It is well known that there is power in dragon’s blood.” He turns the crystal to show a heart the size of a halflings fist frozen in its center. “But few ever think to look beyond the blood to its source.” The heart gives a sudden shudder and the runes carved into the yellow crystal glow deep crimson. “Preserved here in this amber is the half living heart of a newborn dragon. With this, it’s possible to access a dragon’s power and potential.”
