Creative Characters (Starfinder): Triln Vantanos, Vesk Sergeant

This is Creative Characters, your resource for ready-made characters to drop straight into your game. No muss, no fuss, no biohazard containment protocols.

Currently, we are looking at law enforcement in the Starfinder universe, specifically the members of the Particular Crimes Unit, an elite squad that deals with the cases too tricky, obtuse or technically baffling for regular law enforcement. The PCU are appropriate as capable NPCs; either as allies providing or enlisting the players’ assistance or as opponents, trying to stop the players when they find themselves on the wrong side of the law. Or perhaps the players are the members of the PCU, solving cases and dispensing justice across the galaxy.

To make things more interesting, all members of the PCU will have mechanic levels and will use the Steward Officer archetype, showing off different ways the same class can create very different characters.

Last week we met Drabu Hex, a detective specializing in stealth and surveillance and with a penchant for paperwork.

This week, allow me to introduce Detective Sergeant Triln Vantanos.

SPECIAL ABILITIES

Artificial Intelligence (Ex)

Triln has an exocortex installed in her body, granting the following abilities:

  • Combat Tracking – As a move action, Triln can designate a target for her exocortex to track, allowing her to make attacks against that target as if her base attack bonus were equal to her mechanic level (a +2 bonus on her noted attack bonuses).
  • Memory Module – Once per day as a reaction, Triln can reroll a failed skill check to recall knowledge. This ability cannot be used during combat.
  • Wireless Hack – Instead of combat tracking, Triln can have her exocortex access a computer system within 20 feet, using her Computers skill bonus. Triln can work in concert with her exocortex to reduce the time a task takes.

Diplomatic Training (Ex)

In addition to gaining Diplomacy and Culture as class skills, Triln can use Diplomacy for Intimidate checks to demoralize a creature and Culture for Life Science checks to identify humanoids and monstrous humanoids. When Triln attempts a Diplomacy check to change a creature’s attitude, the target’s attitude only worsens if she fails the check by 10 or more.

Expert Rig (Ex)

Triln has a custom rig configured as a handheld item which straps to her belt. This rig counts as any engineering or hacking kit of 6th level or lower as well as a tier 3 computer with the hardened, security I and two secured data modules with firewall countermeasures. It also counts as an Mk I comm unit and audio/video recorder. Whenever Triln successfully uses her rig to hack into a computer, she can disable one countermeasure (excluding firewalls).

Mechanic Tricks (Ex)

Energy shield

Miracle Worker (Ex)

Once per day as a move action, Triln can repair damage to a starship or modify a weapon or armor to function more efficiently, restoring Hull points equal to the starship’s base frame HP increment or grant a +2 enhancement bonus to EAC and KAC or attack and damage rolls for one minute.

Overload (Ex)

As a standard action, Triln can cause a short in an electronic device, rendering it non-functional for 1 round. If the device is in someone’s possession, they may attempt a DC 14 Reflex saving throw to negate the effect.

Remote Hack (Ex)

Triln can attempt Computers and Engineering skill checks at a range of 30 feet.

About

A police officer’s duty is to know the law, that they may uphold it. But as Detective Sergeant Triln Vantanos would tell you, they must also know right from wrong and have the will to defend it. And these aren’t always the same. It was in her youth, upon the planet Vesk-5, that Triln was confronted with this truth. After weeks of civil unrest and simmering tension, strict curfews, and increasing military presence and restrictions, the populace of Vesk-5 was a powder keg waiting for a spark. There was a protest. There was a single, accidental death. As part of the security forces on Vesk-5, Triln knew her duty. After the rebellion was put down, Triln knew she couldn’t stay. Too many innocent lives had been lost for her conscience. She left Vesk-5 and joined the Stewards, dedicating herself to being a protector of others and never again an oppressor.

While her technical skills can sometimes be overshadowed by other members of the PCU, it is Triln’s ability to recognize her squadmates’ strengths and weaknesses and placing them in roles to best leverage their skills that make her a true asset to the PCU. Within the precinct, Sergeant Triln is known for unilaterally enacting several community engagement and outreach initiatives, garnering support and assistance for these projects by bullying and badgering other members of the Stewards. Regardless, the other members of the PCU stand in staunch support of their sergeant, as they know that she would, literally, take a bullet for them.

Sergeant Triln has taken the rookie of the PCU, Oemoe-es Rann, under her wing. He looks up to her as a brilliant officer and mentor and she knows that with a few years of experience, the young and enthusiastic Oemoe-es will make a fine Steward officer.

Sergeant Triln’s prodigious strength and resilience mean that she will get up close and personal when her team is threatened. She also possesses a wide range of skills and the ‘Sarge’ is the only member of the PCU to have completed the compulsory first aid and medical training course.

Next week we’ll take a look at the squad’s rookie and second newest member, Oemoe-es Rann.
