Creative Characters – Naema, Scion of the Dark Beyond

Welcome back to Creative Characters. This time around we’ve got something special theme-wise. Double, double toil and trouble; fire burn and cauldron bubble… That’s right, witches. In this case, all of our characters will be members of a coven, either full or multiclass witches, displaying the wide variety of possible builds.

For the sake of reference, and consistency, all characters here are created with the Elite stat array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8) and all hit points are rolled as averages. They are also written so that they can be used as either NPCs or PCs. Next up is our coven’s unofficial leader Naema, Scion of the Dark Beyond.

SPECIAL ABILITIES

Occult Familiar

Naema can seal pacts with spirits. Her binder level equals her witch level, and she binds spirits as an occultist of that same level. Naema uses Intelligence in place of Charisma on binding checks and when calculating the effectiveness of granted abilities.

Naema uses her familiar as a bridge between reality and the spirit realm. For this reason, she houses bound spirits within her familiar. This follows the same rules for sealing pacts with spirits. As a result, it is her familiar, not Naema herself, that is able to show or suppress a spirit’s sign if a good pact is made and it is her familiar that is forced to show the spirit’s sign and suffer its personality influence if a poor pact is made.

Her familiar is unable to call upon a spirit’s powers without assistance and gains none of the benefits of being bound to a spirit. While her familiar is showing a spirit’s sign, Naema gains access to all of the spirit’s powers, including granted abilities, the spirit’s favored allies and enemies, its physical sign (and influence if a poor pact was made), and so forth. Both Naema and her familiar can cause the influence penalty to accrue and exorcism attempts can be made against either the Naema or her familiar to prematurely end a pact. Use the higher Will save bonus between the Naema and her familiar against the spirit’s influence or when attempting to resist an exorcism attempt.

If her familiar is slain, any spirits bound to it return from whence they came, causing the Naema to lose access to the spirit’s powers. Both the Naema and her familiar must be on the same plane and within 30 feet of each other in order for the Naema to receive a bound spirit’s benefits. A familiar that is merged with their spirit drudge (such as from a tattooed sorcerer’s tattoo familiar) does not supply a bound spirit’s benefits to the occult drudge. Both Naema and her familiar are considered each other’s vestigial companions at all times, preventing a Naema from gaining a spirit’s vestigial companion. If Naema gains any feats or class features that alter the pact-making process (such as Flexible Pactmaking) her familiar can benefit from this knowledge, applying it to any pacts that it familiar makes. This ability functions as bind spirit for the purpose of qualifying for feats, prestige classes, and similar abilities.

Occult Patron

Naema has selected The Dark Beyond as a patron from among the 13 constellations to serve as a patron constellation. She cannot seal pacts with a spirit whose constellation opposes her patron constellation. Also, reduce the occult sadist’s binder level by ½ when making binding checks with unaligned spirits.

In addition, Naema gains additional spells to her list of spells known. While her familiar is bound to an aligned spirit, she can prepare and cast these spells as any other witch spell. If all of her familiar’s aligned spirits are expelled, any prepared patron spells are lost along with the spirit.

ABOUT

The blood of a dreaded night hag runs in her veins, granting her strange and unnatural power. The unofficial leader of the coven, Naema places her sisters and her bond with the dark entity with whom she communes equally above all else. Often driven by motivations that are difficult to explain, she nevertheless has the full trust of her coven, guiding them to survive and thrive despite those that would seek to mistreat them.
