The Magic Shoppe: Legendary Swords

The sound of hammers hitting anvils rings out all around you. You feel a sudden blast of steam as a nearby smith quenches a blade in water. Valcav is nodding his head appreciatively as he looks on at the continued forging. “Swords have been around almost as long as there have been heroes to wield them” Valcav uses a pair of tongs to pick up a half-molten blade and appraises its shape. “We live in dangerous times as I’m sure you know. Dangerous threats have been on the rise and heroes have risen up to meet them. But for the truly legendary threats, heroes must arm themselves with truly legendary weapons.”

Sword of the True King

ABOUT

Powerful wizards have been known to hide these swords where a “hero” can find them. They are completely unprepared for the prospect of ruling and the wizard is able to step in to advise them.

DESCRIPTION

This exquisitely crafted blade has a golden hilt and a ruby-encrusted pommel.

Pathfinder:

Aura strong enchantment and transmutation; Price 152,500 gp; Slot none; CL 19th; Weight 4 lbs.

BENEFITS

A sword of the true king is a mighty weapon that functions as a +5 glorious longsword. Unlike most glorious weapons, the wielder can choose to dim the sword’s light.

Kings must be politically astute as well as cunning warriors. As long as the sword remains in its wielders possession they gain a +5 competence bonus on all Diplomacy and Knowledge (nobility) checks. A sword of the true king serves as a reminder to others of the wielders station. Once per day the wielder can roll a Diplomacy check twice and take the more favorable result.

The wielder of a sword of the true king is able to inspire people to follow them in times of peace and times of war. The sword grants a +4 sacred bonus to their Leadership score. The sword also allows the wielder to recruit a cohort whose alignment is within one step of theirs without penalty.

CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS

Feats Craft Magic Arms and Armor; Spells eagle’s splendor, overwhelming presence; Cost 76,250 gp

5e:

Any creature within 10 feet of you must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or become blinded for one round. The sword also fills your mind with courtly manners and protocol which gives you advantage on Intelligence (History) and Charisma (Persuasion) checks. Once per month, you can inspire great loyalty from someone who follows you. By placing the sword over their shoulders you can entrust them with a great quest as per the geas spell.

Lunar Blade

ABOUT

These swords were first created by the jealous worshipers of a god of night. They forged them to serve as a check against the more established worshipers of the gods of light.

DESCRIPTION

This long-bladed sword gives off a silvery glow. The hilt is jet black and decorated with moonstone shards.

Pathfinder:

Aura strong evocation Price 70,750 gp; Slot none; CL 19th; Weight 2 lbs.

BENEFITS

Like a sun blade, a lunar blade is a bastard sword that can be wielded as if it were a short sword. A moon blade functions as a +2 bastard sword that counts as silver for overcoming damage reduction.

A lunar blade has the ability to summon the darkness of the night. By holding the sword aloft and speaking the command word the wielder can create a 10-foot globe of darkness that lowers the light level by two steps. The wielder can extend this globe of darkness 5 feet by spending a full-round action. The globe can be extended to a maximum of 60-feet in this way and will remain for 1 minute after the wielder lowers the sword.

Five times per day the wielder can point the sword at a target and outline them in shimmering starlight as per the faerie fire spell.

A lunar blade also strengthens the connection lycanthropes share with the moon. As long as they keep the blade on their person an afflicted lycanthrope is treated as if it were a natural lycanthrope instead. Additionally, when a lycanthrope damages a humanoid target with a lunar blade they can attempt to infect a target with the curse of lycanthropy.

CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS

Feats Craft Magic Arms and Armor; Spells deeper darkness, faerie fire; Cost 35,375 gp

5e:

Weapon (longsword), legendary (requires attunement)

A lunar blade is a silvered weapon that weighs less than a normal longsword. It has the finesse property and you are considered proficient with it if you are proficient with longswords or shortswords. You gain a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls with the sword and it deals necrotic damage instead of slashing damage. As long as the sword is drawn you can choose to create a 15-foot radius of magical darkness as per the spell. Three times per day you can also point the sword at a target to cover them in faerie fire. Lastly, if a lycanthrope damages a humanoid target with a lunar blade they can choose for them to make DC 13 Constitution saving throw or risk being cursed with their form of lycanthropy

Sword of Focused Will

ABOUT

According to legends, these weapons were originally created by a group of immortal gnomes. They gifted these swords to their corps of champions and charged them with protecting the world.

DESCRIPTION

This blade-less hilt is made of clear crystal. As you grasp it and reach out with your mind a blade of energy springs forth.

Pathfinder:

Aura strong evocation and transmutation Price 76,000 gp; Slot none; CL 19th; Weight 4 lbs.

BENEFITS

A sword of focused will appears as a plain hilt until activated. It is activated by spending 10 minutes in quiet meditation and succeeding on a DC 20 Will save. This causes a blade of pure mental energy to spring from the hilt. An activated sword of focused will functions as a +2 greatsword that deals force damage rather than slashing.

As an extension of the wielder’s mind, a sword of focused will can also overcome damage reduction depending on the wielder’s alignment. For example, a lawful evil wielder’s sword counts as both lawful and evil for overcoming damage reduction. If a wielder’s alignment is true neutral they can choose an alignment to count as each time they activate the sword.

A sword of focused will must remain in its wielder’s hands in order to stay activated. Additionally, it requires a continuous level of focus to remain activated. A wielder loses focus if they enter a barbarian’s rage, if they gain the confused, exhausted, fascinated, panickedstaggered, or stunned conditions or if they fall unconscious.

CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS

Feats Craft Magic Arms and Armor; Spells align weapon, spiritual weapon; Cost 38,000 gp

5e:

Weapon (greatsword), legendary (requires attunement)

Until you activate the sword of focused thoughts, it stays as a crystal hilt. By sitting in quiet contemplation and focusing your mind for 10 minutes you can cause a blade of mental energy to form by succeeding on a DC 20 Wisdom check. Once you activate the blade it becomes a greatsword that deals psychic damage rather than slashing and you gain +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls. A sword of focused will deactivates if it ever leaves your hands. It requires a lot of mental effort to keep the blade activated. The blade will vanish if you enter a barbarian rage, fail the saving throw for the confusion spell, gain the exhausted, frightened, incapacitated, or stunned condition, or if you fall unconscious.
