The Magic Shoppe: Caving Items

The mine cart tracks venture around a bend in the cave system and out of your field of view. From behind you comes the screeching protest of metal brakes as a mine cart comes to a slow stop next to you. Valcav grins at you, pickaxe in hand. “You weren’t thinking of going down there unprepared were you?” He deftly climbs out of the mine cart, with a burlap sack slung over his shoulder. “You wouldn’t last ten minutes without the proper gear.” He opens the sack to show you the items within.

Geode Brooch

“If you’re exploring an uncharted cave system with questionable structural stability you’ll be glad you brought along one of these”

This metal clasp used to hold a cloak in place is adorned with a small sliver of a geode.

Pathfinder:

Aura moderate abjuration and evocation Price 21,600 gp; Slot neck; CL 12th; Weight

Once per day as an immediate action the wearer can mentally activate a geode broach. The broach creates a sphere of crystal and rock surrounding the wearer with a radius of 15 feet. This sphere protects the wearer and anyone within the radius from outside hazards such as cave-ins or lava flows. The walls are one foot thick and have hardness 10 with 200 hit points. The inner crystal walls of the sphere provide a soft white light. The wearer of the broach can brighten or dim these lights on command. The protective sphere lasts up to 12 hours and contains enough air for up to four Medium-sized creatures to survive comfortably. A small sized creature uses one half of the air a medium sized creature would while a large sized creature uses double. The wearer of the geode broach can dismiss the protective sphere before its allotted time as a standard action.

The sphere lasts up to 12 hours and contains enough air for up to four Medium-sized creatures to survive comfortably.  A small sized creature uses one half of the air a medium sized creature would while a large sized creature uses double. The interior crystal walls of the sphere produce a soft white glow which you can brighten or dim on command. You can dismiss the protective sphere before the allotted 12 hours are up.

Deep Delving Mattock

“Originally created by the Duergar, these heavy-duty tunneling tools have since found their way to the surface.”

This hefty digging tool appears similar to a pickaxe at first glance. Both the shaft and the head are forged from the same dark black iron. The chisel blade of the head is adorned with bolstering runes written in Undercommon.

Pathfinder:

Aura moderate transmutation; Price 11,500 gp; Slot —; CL 9th; Weight 60 lbs.

The shaft of a deep delving mattock is five feet long. Any creature of at least large size can use it to dig through loose material such as dirt, sand or gravel. It can clear a five-foot cube of loose material with ten minutes of work. It is also powerful enough to smash through solid stone. It can clear a five-foot cube of stone with one hour of work. If used as a weapon, it is the equivalent of a huge +2 adamantine mattock, dealing 3d6 points of damage.

If you are large sized, such as by being under the effect of an enlarge spell, you can use a deep delving mattock for tunnel digging. You can clear a five-foot cube of loose material such as dirt, sand or gravel with ten minutes of work. You can also smash through a five-foot cube of solid stone by with one hour of work. When used in combat a deep delving mattock functions similarly to a huge sized war pick dealing 3d8 points of piercing damage. It also gains the two-handed special property when used in this way.

Figurine of Wondrous Power: Citrine Canary

“Many Dwarven miners swear by these figurines with their multipurpose uses. Some teams of miners even refuse to work if the canary can’t be activated.”

This smooth yellow crystal carving depicts a small bird with its head tilted inquisitively.

Pathfinder:

Aura moderate conjuration Price 8,300 gp; Slot —; CL 11th; Weight 1 lb.

On command, this crystal figurine transforms into a canary (Use the stats for a raven) made of citrine. Like a silver raven, a citrine canary can be used to deliver messages. When not delivering messages it can be ordered to stand guard. While standing guard a citrine canary is under the constant effect of the detect radiation and detect poison spells. If it detects radiation or poison effects in the area it will let out a shrill cry until either ordered to stop or it is returned to its statuette form. A citrine canary also has access to the stonecunning dwarf racial trait. If it detects unusual stonework it will let out a different cry and hover near it. Additionally, a citrine canary can be commanded to produce light which acts as a daylight spell. Activating the light drains one additional hour from the time available for a citrine canary to remain activated. A citrine canary can remain activated for only 24 hours per week. This duration need not be continuous, but it must be used in 1-hour increments.

CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS

Feats Craft Wondrous Item; Spells animate objects; Cost 4,150 gp

5e:

Wondrous item, rare (requires attunement)

This crystal statuette is a cousin to the silver raven figurine of wondrous power. It can transform into a canary for up to 12 hours. Once it has been used, it can’t be used again until 2 days have passed. Besides being able to cast the animal messenger spell on it you can do a lot with a citrine canary. It can detect poisonous effects as per the detect poison and disease letting out a shrill cry if poisonous gas is detected. A citrine canary has advantage on all perception checks to notice unusual stonework even if it is not actively searching. It receives a free check whenever it comes within 10 feet of any stonework that contains a hidden trap or door. A citrine canary can also be commanded to produce light equal to the daylight spell. This light effect drains one additional hour from the total time the citrine canary can remain transformed.
