The Magic Shoppe: Bounty Hunting Gear

Valcav nods at you from behind his counter. “So you’re going into the bounty hunting business are you? It is a very noble calling.” He taps his long stem pipe over a bowl and a cloud of sweet smelling smoke permeates the small shop. “It’s not the life for everyone, or so I’ve heard. It also can be quite dangerous depending on the bounty in question.” Valcav bends down below the counter and appears again with a wooden chest bound in gold. “You need just the right kind of tools to be a successful bounty hunter.” He opens the chest…

Gauntlet of Grasping

Valcav places the gauntlet on his hand and flexes the fingers. “You cannot go wrong with one of these. Your bounty will never be able to get away from you. That is assuming you can catch them first.”

Pathfinder:

Aura moderate transmutation; Price 5,500 gp; Slot hands; CL 10th; Weight 2lbs.

DESCRIPTION

This slate gray gauntlet covers the arm all the way up to the elbow when worn. Chains are depicted swirling up from the wrist in black ink.

BENEFITS

A gauntlet of grasping functions as magical variation of a locked gauntlet. As a full round action the wearer can make a grapple combat maneuver check against an adjacent opponent by locking the gauntlet onto them. The wearer does not take a penalty for attempting or maintaining a grapple check with one hand. Succeeding on this grapple check means the wearer and their target are fastened together and they both gain the grappled condition. The wearer of the gauntlet gains a +10 to their combat maneuver defense  for the purposes of anyone breaking or escaping this grapple.

CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS

Feats Craft Wondrous Item; Spells titanic anchoring; Cost 2,250 gp

5e:

Wondrous item, Common

While wearing these dull metal gauntlets you are capable of grappling foes in a almost unescapable grip. When wearing a gauntlet of grasping roll your grapple check against an adjacent target with advantage. If the target tries to escape your grapple they have disadvantage on their Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) checks.

Conman’s Bane

Valcav places a small notebook on the counter in front of you. “This is a favorite of the guards in a few frontier towns. With one of these, you can spot potential grifters a mile away.”

Pathfinder:

Aura moderate divination; Price 3,000 gp; Slot none; CL 5th; Weight 1/2 lb;

DESCRIPTION

This brown leather bound notebook is small enough to fit easily into a pocket. They often bear the holy symbol of gods dedicated to truth or justice.

BENEFITS

Using this book it is possible to determine if someone is using an alias. To use a conman’s bane, open to a blank page in the notebook and write down the name of your chosen target. The next step requires a small piece of your target such as a hair, piece of nail or a drop of blood.  Placing the piece of your target in the book and closing it activates its magic. This process consumes the piece of your target. One minute later the notebook will open and display any other names that the target has used in a neatly written list. It will not reveal names or titles that the target has not shared with anyone else. For example, if someone gives a fake name when registering at an inn a conman’s bane will list it. It will not, however, reveal that someone is a notorious thief unless they leave a calling card or claimed credit in some fashion.

CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS

Feats Craft Wondrous Item; Spells blood biography; Cost 1,500 gp

5e:

Wondrous item, rare (requires attunement)

This small leather-bound notebook reveals if someone is using a false name. In order to discover information about a target, it requires a piece of them such as a hair, nail or drop of blood and a name there are known by. To activate the book first write down the target’s name. Next, place the piece of the target on a page and close the notebook. One minute later the conman’s bane will open itself and list all of the names your target has used in with excellent penmanship. The conman’s bane only displays names or titles the target or has shared with others. It will not, for example, reveal the secret identity of a masked bandit unless the bandit has shared their true identity with someone else.

Overzealous Ointment

Valcav opens up the container of ointment at dabs its contents on a nearby taxidermied rat. “You know how it is. You finally kill your bounty and lo and behold the poster says wanted ‘alive’ rather than ‘dead’. With a couple of tins of this little miracle, you can still manage to get paid and leave no one the wiser.”

Pathfinder:

Aura faint illusion Price 600 gp; Slot none; CL 5th; Weight 1/2 lb;

DESCRIPTION

This small square brass container of ointment bears a pink rose growing out of a grinning skull

BENEFITS

By rubbing this ointment on a dead body it is possible to fool people into thinking the corpse is asleep or unconscious. Overzealous ointment only works on a mostly intact and recently deceased body. It will not regrow missing limbs or the musculature of an entire skeleton. By spending ten minutes rubbing the ointment onto a corpse, wounds seem to vanish and its face regains color. The corpse appears much as it did in life but it is possible to notice a lack of breathing with a successful Perception check (DC 13). Each container of overzealous ointment contains enough ointment to fully cover two medium humanoids. The ointment’s effects last 24 hours and the corpse regains its former appearance after that time. Negative energy, such as the animating force of an undead creature, disrupts the effect of overzealous ointment and rendering it ineffective on undead creatures.

CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS

Feats Craft Wondrous Item; Spells appearance of life; Cost 300 gp

5e:

Wondrous item, Uncommon

This small square brass container contains two doses of ointment. Each dose is capable of covering one medium humanoid. The container and its contents weight 1/2 lb. This ointment is capable of giving the illusion that a dead body is still alive. It covers up wounds and brings color back, but will not regrow lost limbs. Using the ointment requires spending ten minutes massaging it into the flesh of a corpse. A DC 10 Wisdom (Perception) check will reveal that the corpse is not breathing. The ointment’s effects last 24 hours and the corpse returns to its former appearance at that time. The necrotic energy of reanimated undead creatures disrupts the effect of overzealous ointment and rendering it ineffective on undead creatures.
